Week 3
This week is the formal beginning of our first major thematic arc:
The Empire Strikes Back- Writing about Race, Racisms, and Empire. At this point, we will begin to focus in more directly on the specifics of representational strategies and approaches of representing other racial and ethnic groups within the context of both anime and literature. |
Tuesday, 20 January, we will be screening the first episode of Black Lagoon. To be prepared, I encourage you to click below to take a look at the viewing guide.
Thursday, 22 January, we will be screening the first episode of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.

This week's readings will give us an option to begin a discussion about the nature of colonial domination and the effects it has on people who are perceived to be categorically different. The series that we will be looking at--in conjunction with our readings from Susan Napier, Robert Young, Leo Ching, and Ralph Ellison--will give us additional insights into how marginalized peoples cope with systemic (and indeed epistemic) realities of Empire. Representations of the various coping mechanisms, resistance strategies, and historical circumstances will give the series that we are looking at some new and deeper meanings.
