Hi Class,
So we've got a long weekend ahead of us and two reading assignments to get through. I want you all to be conscientious of the nature of these readings and to plan ahead, as they may take you some time to get through. That said, enjoy the FSU game on Saturday, yes, and celebrate the end of summer with whatever Labor Day events you've got planned...but let's keep Drs Dower and hooks in mind as we do so, eh?
For this writing assignment, I'd like for you all to try and craft two paragraphs worth of material.
First:
What surprised you about Dower's take on WWII? Had you considered that the war with Japan might have been framed thusly? What was one of the stand-out elements of racialization that you were previously unaware of?
And Second:
What is your favorite movie? Have you learned anything from it? Could you--like hooks suggests--be critical about it, even though it was something that you really enjoyed? Do you have a favorite genre of film too? Does "realism" or "relatability" factor into how much you like a film or genre of film?
I'd like for these to be finished by 11:59pm on Tuesday, 2 September, so work with all due diligence on these points. I'm looking for some thoughtful and detailed responses that ideally make some reference to at least one line from each of the readings.
